When 28 Hongkong Street opened in Singapore in 2011, it hired a PR firm whose sole purpose was to keep it out of the news and off the radar. But despite its attempts at secrecy, Singapore caught on. It has been voted Asia’s best bar three years running, and is currently ranked seventh-best in the world.
Later this month 28 Hongkong Street will pop up at The Everleigh in Melbourne and at Henrietta Supper Club in Sydney. Craft-spirit importer Neat Spirits is behind the event; it’s the team that brings Plantation Rum, Pierre Ferrand Cognac and more to Australia.
Dan Walker, Neat Spirits’ sales and marketing director, says that 28HKS is a bar with international flair. Two of its bartenders are Australian – Jason Williams and Zach De Git – and its creative directors are from San Francisco. “It’s a mishmash of Asian, American and Australian influence,” he says.
Cocktails will include the tropical, such as the Five Foot Assassin made with rum, spices, fresh lime, mango puree and coconut-pandan cream; the American, such as the Jimi & Janis with rye whiskey and walnut bitters; and the Australian, such as The Riviera made with Sydney-based PS40 tonic.
Food will lean American; truffled mac’n’cheese balls, fried steak and apple fritters.
Walker is excited to bring the 28HKS experience to Australia. “These guys are at the forefront of the cocktail scene in Singapore,” he says. “It’s not every day that one of the world’s best cocktail bars comes to you.”
Tickets are $20 and include one cocktail.
