Nothing causes present-buying paralysis like finding a gift for someone you love. Thankfully, the aptly named, Sorry Thanks I Love You has every situation covered. What began as an online store dedicated to housing quality gifts in one place has become a pop-up shop in Martin Place until June 2015.
The idea for a specialised online gift store came about when owner Caroline Ball was living in New York and wanted to send a bottle of whiskey to a friend in Tasmania. Spotting a gap in the market, Ball, along with Matt Gurry and Ant White capitalised on the artisan food, craft spirit and boutique floristry resurgence at their doorstep. The desire to collect these quality creations into one place was the start of Sorry Thanks I Love You, which offers items such as hand-woven cashmere from Kashmir, jewellery from Dinosaur Designs, Maya Sunny Honey, Bruny Island Cheese and reindeer-antler knives by master craftsmen GrayBear are among the selection.
The pop-up store in the GPO will house specialty presents from all over the world, including bags from Danish rainwear company Rains, food-inspired jewellery from Lucy Folk and hand-painted axes by GrayBear. Perfect for any Father’s Day mind block, the store will also play host to champagne and oyster nights, whisky tastings, and sessions with Maya Sunny Honey’s apiarist Andrew Wyszynski and his 10,000 live bees, GrayBear, and vintage-watch expert and industrial designer Angus Zhao from AHW Studio.
The pop-up store is proof it really is better to give than to receive. “The recipient feels good and you feel even better … Especially if there’s whiskey involved,” says Ball.
