Dion Lee's AW16 collection showed last week at New York Fashion Week.
For the fourth season in a row the designer collaborated with fellow Sydneysiders and jewellers Sarah & Sebastian on a collection of facial (and other) jewellery for the collection.
Lee’s signature use of grey, white, navy and cream hues were complemented by touches of rich maroon, inspired by the German-American artist Otto Piene’s disintegrating colourscapes.
“Dion always has a strong concept for his collections,” says Sarah Gittoes, co-owner of Sarah & Sebastian. “When we collaborate, our main objective is for the jewellery to underline [Lee’s] core concepts.”
Husband-and-wife creative duo Gittoes and Robert Sebastian Grynkofki created neckpieces and lip rings for the collaboration. At first glance these appear to be piercing the skin. Lee’s work too may seem simple, but there’s always hidden detail; the illusion of pleats, clever draping and cutouts.
“We wanted to give the illusion of a disc piercing the lower lip,” says Gittoes.
Created from sterling silver, the lip and neckpieces were understated but captivating. They shone in the NYFW lights. Lee’s designs were similarly sleek; the collection sharply defines the female shape with draping dresses and skirts.
We are likely to see more Dion Lee x Sarah & Sebastian collections in the future. Gittoes enjoys the conceptual layer to their work together. She says they both view fashion in a similar light.
“What we produce leans toward the realm of sculpture as opposed to ‘conventional’ jewellery pieces,” she says. “We extract themes and develop pieces from his conceptual designs to complement elements and features of the garments.”
Sarah & Sebastian’s jewellery will be available alongside Dion Lee’s AW 2016 collection at select Dion Lee stores. Sarah & Sebastian also launched OIL, a new range, last week.
