Lee Mathews has opened a new store at Paddington’s The Intersection – the strip of boutiques along the corner of Oxford Street and Glenmore Road. It joins a selection of exclusive Australian designers.
The new store reflects the clean and timeless style of her latest collection, with a neutral palette, raw and finished timber, stone surfaces and “a beautiful light or two”. Mathews says she wanted the store to feel calm and contemporary, yet natural. “I wanted a cleaner, less-cluttered space with simple, purpose-made areas,” she explains.
The store features items from her spring/summer 15 collection, which showed on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia this year, marking more than 15 years in business. Inspired by a trip to Japan, the collection features a largely monochromatic palette with bursts of red, a hint of androgyny and a striking Japanese Katazome print. “Japan was where I went when the new store was on the horizon,” says Mathews. “That trip informed so much of the look and feel of both this current collection and the look of the new store. It was so exciting and felt like the pieces of a puzzle fell into place.”
Alongside the new season collections are ceramics, accessories, jewellery and homewares. Mathews is also collaborating with like-minded artisans such as ceramicist Hayden Youlley, providing areas in the store to house their collections. “We are always looking for people to make things that fit in with the aesthetic of the stores,” says Mathews. “Now that we have the space, it is fun to have.”
From her beginnings on Sydney’s northern beaches, which she describes as “very homespun,” Mathews says the label has evolved in the same way as the store – a bit cleaner, simpler, with key elements remaining constant over the years, such as her use of natural fabrics: linen, silk, cotton, wool and cashmere. “[The label is] often described as ‘modern bohemian’, which I kind of like. It sounds romantic, but travelled, informed and practical.”
