Vancouver-based basics label Kit and Ace has officially landed in Australia this month, with stores sprouting in Melbourne, Brisbane, and then both Bondi Junction and Surry Hills in Sydney. Founded by Shannon and JJ Wilson, the label solves the problems of pilling, shrinking and stretching when it comes to washing luxury fabrics. Kit and Ace’s trademark T-shirts are built from “technical cashmere” – a machine-washable blend designed to be easy and luxurious all at once.
“Kit and Ace was created to fill a void in the technical-apparel market,” says Wilson. “We’ve taken natural fibres like cashmere and enhanced them so that they are easy to wear and easy to care for.”
In store, expect to find easy staples in grey marl, white, black, camel and soft shell. Each store experience is unique, drawing from the creativity of its locale. The Surry Hills shop features a table by feted local designer Tomek Archer, and feature lighting in glossy copper by Vincent Buret. An exhibition wall currently shows artwork by Sydney-based illustrator Miranda Lorikeet.
“The local creative class is our inspiration, we collaborate with them during the build of each shop. When you walk in, you get a strong sense of that. The creativity of the neighbourhood, the talent of the craftsmen – it all comes together.”
