Sun, swimming, snoozing and boozing – summer is not the time for being serious. Local label Kinoak gets us in the mood for the warmer months with their latest collection Free Time.
“It’s just a mash-up of all sorts of different ideas,” designer Amie Kohane says of the print-heavy collection. “I guess it’s just about the feeling of summer and free time, good weather and all that stuff.” We can easily picture ourselves spending time poolside in the beach shorts, or throwing on a Free Time logo T-shirt to head to the shops in the blistering heat.
For Kinoak, the devil is always in the detail. The sportswear-inspired range features drawstrings, ankle zips, elastic waists and surprise pockets. “I like special details and I love pockets,” Kohane says. “I think everything should have pockets if you can.”
This season is the first time the label has delved into swimwear. “We weren’t sure what to expect but it was quite well received and fun to make, so we will probably do that again,” she says. It’s also their first foray into caps, which were made in Japan.
Kinoak has made a rather interesting – and even bold – move to go almost exclusively online this season. “We make everything in Melbourne and we use good fabrics so it can get quite expensive,” Kohane explains. “When a retailer puts their 100 per cent mark up on it, it gets very expensive in the store, so our decision to go online was to keep things at a more realistic price point.”
