The ultimate high-end sneaker has arrived in the form of athletic footwear from fashion innovator Tom Ford. It will be stocked exclusively at Harrolds luxury menswear boutiques around Australia. Former creative director of Gucci and YSL, and director of the innately stylish 2009 film A Single Man, Tom Ford and his label have become iconic. It’s no surprise then that his departure from traditional menswear to off-duty, sportswear-inspired looks has the fashion industry excited.
With signature suaveness, Ford has jumped on the sports-luxe trend, a revolution in technical superiority and comfort. “The Tom Ford sneaker is a monumental event in the menswear calendar this season. Since they were first seen on the runway there has been a huge media and industry interest because they represent a departure from the established direction of the Tom Ford brand,” says Harrolds buyer Rob Ferris. Harrolds has been home to Tom Ford’s menswear for several years. “This latest drop of sneakers is another exciting chapter in our relationship with one of the premier labels in the world,” explains Ferris.
The designer fashion industry is no stranger to the luxury sneaker market, which is in a stage of international growth with major labels trying their hands at sleek, sporty designs over recent years. “Started by the likes of Givenchy and Giuseppe Zanotti, there is a definite trend towards sneakers from a large number of premier labels including Brioni, Lanvin and Valentino,” says Ferris’ business partner Ross Poulakis.
As you’d expect, the first offering from Tom Ford is no ordinary sneaker. It’s leather and velvet, assembled by artisan cobblers in Italy. These craftsmen stitch, polish and rest the shoes over 10 days before a final three-day process of hand polishing.
Poulakis describes the finished product as, “minimalist, retro-inspired and, like everything else from Tom Ford, unmistakably luxurious.”
