In the battle of the cities, Sydney designers may take out the summer crown, but Melbourne is the reigning champion of the colder months. Brands that hail from Victoria just seem to understand winter better (think thicker sweaters, cosier coats and sturdier boots). Cult-favourite label búl is a prime example of this. Designer Virginia Martin pairs natural fibres such as wool, leather and silk with classic tailoring in muted, earthy tones – and it’s all available at the label’s recently opened pop-up shop in The Strand Arcade.
Martin’s timing could not be better. The temperatures have just started to drop and ensembles are crying out for the warmth of one of búl’s luxurious knitted scarves or perfectly tapered trousers. “We really felt like our Sydney customer base was growing rapidly and it was time to expand,” says Martin. “We wanted to wait until we found a location that fit with the brand. Our stores in Melbourne have a very distinct feel – very natural, light-filled and welcoming spaces.”
Their temporary shop in The Strand Arcade fulfils the brief. The store is awash with the arcade’s filtered light – courtesy of that historic skylight – and is fitted out with custom-made furnishings, including some stunning racks that seem to spring organically from tree trunk bases, and a subdued tonal colour palette. Sydney, it’s time to embrace a little bit of Melbourne in your wardrobe.
