When the cooler months creep up on us, it’s time to rework the wardrobe. This means unpacking the sweaters, coats and leather pants that have been hiding in the back of your wardrobe for the past six months. I used to despise winter, although my mind has recently changed now that I have a love affair with layering. My new motto: “there is no such thing as too many layers”. This season, make it interesting. Add a dress over your pants; wear a long-lined T-shirt under another T-shirt, or even wear a knit under your dress for added warmth. Here are my favourite layering ideas for the season.

Look One: Some of you might think I’m crazy, but yes, you can wear a skirt over your pants. I wear this Hansen & Gretel skirt over my Ellery pants, which gives the “I just casually tied my shirt around my waist” effect. I also wear my Adidas tee for an added sport/street element and an oversized Karen Walker coat to keep me warm.

Look Two: For this outfit I play with different textures and grey tones. I’m wearing a charcoal Bassike long-lined tee over cropped slim-line Saba pants, layering an Oskar long cardigan, C&M blazer and Skin & Threads cashmere scarf. I love playing with different lengths of fabric and adding in my new Stan Smith Adidas sneakers.

Look Three: When it comes to layering, this Hansen & Gretel slip dress is my go-to classic piece. You can wear it as a dress over pants, with longer skirts and T-shirts and/or under jumpers, cardigans and coats. Here I’m wearing a Hansen & Gretel slip, Ellery flares, Skin & Threads cashmere scarf and a trench by Black by Geng.

Look Four: Layering doesn’t always have to be too complicated. It can be as simple as layering one piece under another. Turtlenecks are a great layer for cooler months; they can be worn under almost anything. Here I wear a Uniqlo turtleneck under a Kaliver cashmere dress.

Stay tuned for the second instalment of this series, featuring men's layering, to be published next week.
