From humble beginnings selling clothes in Paddington Market to a global empire spanning more than 40 stores in jet-set locations like Capri, Rome, Milan and St Tropez, Australian sisters and designers Nicky and Simone Zimmermann have come a long way in 20 years – climbing to the forefront of Australian fashion and leading the charge internationally for year-round resort wear.

Their freshly renovated and expanded store in Westfield Bondi Junction, on the heels of new boutiques in Cannes, Forte Dei Marmi and Rome, is testament to their highly curated vision and evolving nature as a brand. Nothing sits stagnant. Having taken over the shop next door, the new-look store is now the label’s 200-square-metre Australian flagship.

“We have been in this location in Bondi Junction since the property launched as a luxury destination in 2003 and have slowly grown the store size and worked to improve the experience over time,” Nicky Zimmermann tells Broadsheet.

Spruced up by Australian interior design firm Studio McQualter, it’s all about relaxed femininity with an eclectic vibe that feels more like a chic Milanese apartment than a shopping centre. Soft elements such as the ruffled avocado-hued sofa, playful mint-striped rug and oversized floral curtains are offset with interesting, almost industrial surfaces: hemp-block walls, which absorb and store carbon, a terrazzo floor, and a timber and futuristic silver-foil ceiling.

The considered artworks are mostly by Australian women, such as Emily Ferretti, and a spacious “sitting room” offers space for partners, children and prams.

“It’s important to us that everyone is comfortable and feels welcome; we want people to enjoy hanging out in this space,” Nicky explains.

Like the clothes, which are joyous clashes of prints, patterns, textures and rich fabrics, the store’s design features contrast in supremely stylish ways. Vintage lights and one-off bits and bobs from far and wide are scattered around the store from acclaimed artists and tastemakers. The entry door was salvaged from Trinity College in Oxford. A marble table and its ceramic base belonged to fashion icon and interior designer Iris Apfel. It sits in the window along with a giant, show-stopping soft resin vase that looks like melted lava, created by acclaimed Italian designer Gaetano Pesce.

“We want to bring individual elements to each store. It’s very important to me that we have aesthetically different experiences, and no identikits,” Nicky says.

Mission accomplished. One quick spin around this newly opened flagship confirms there’s nothing else like it.
