‘Between the sheets and on the streets' - such is the premise behind Masini & Chern’s stylish and sophisticated debut sleepwear collection which launches this month. Channelling the pyjamas-as-daywear trend, the brand's luxe designs would look as at home tucked under the covers on a rainy Sunday morning with a cup of Earl Grey as they would at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc ordering afternoon spritzers.
Masini & Chern was conceived two years ago by lifelong friends, Ebonnie Masini-Thomson and Natasha Chernov Homann. Both possess a mutual love for sleepwear and recognised a gap in the market for sophisticated designs; that is, sleepwear without the teddy bears, ducks or clouds. The Melbourne-based pair first met in high school, and after graduating from RMIT together, both went on to establish successful careers; Ebonnie as a fashion buyer working between Dubai and London, and Natasha as a interior designer then advertising executive.
It is clear that they share a similar sense of personal style, which is reflected in their brand’s aesthestic. “Tash and I are both a bit like tomboys – no frills, no love hearts,” jokes Masini-Thomson. Rather, they draw their inspiration from the worlds of art, interiors and design, as well as an overarching focus on comfort.
This season Masini & Chern presents a collection of collared, button-up pyjamas with contrast piping in understated block colours, monochromatic pin stripes and prints. The designers cite “1960s Hollywood glamour and the use of colour and print during that era,” as a key inspiration. The iconic banana leaf print home to the famed Beverly Hills Hotel is one such print and is a highlight of the collection. Another favourite is the garden flamingo print, which also has a distinctly 1960s vibe, but with a contemporary twist.
Both designers have a clear vision of how they see their lifestyle brand evolving over the next few seasons. “We plan to introduce eye masks, robes and slippers and then also linen, cushions and candles, all with the same sophisticated and fashion forward approach,” says Natasha. No doubt they will. Nothing seems accidental about Masini & Chern.
Masini & Chern is stocked exclusively via their newly launched online store. The brand also offers a complimentary personalisation service with the option to have initials embroidered on the cuffs of their pyjamas.
