Nylons is a jewellry line with a new outlook on what makes a piece of jewellry a classic. Melburnians and best friends Bianca Censori and Irene Papas launched Nylons after giving their friends early versions of their creations as gifts “We started just for fun, not expecting the popularity it would gain. So I guess you could say we just fell into designing together,” says Censori.

Nylons is a collaborative venture. The two friends have a compatible aesthetic and both have a background in design. They fell in love with the idea of juxtaposing two materials rarely used together – Swarovski crystals and nylon mesh – to create chokers, drop-hoop earrings and bracelets. As Papas explains, “Swarovski has an extremely classic look but when the crystals are mixed it makes for contemporary and unique pieces.” Using crystals in a range of colors. from multifaceted midnight blacks, to iridescent whites with a healthy injection of pastel pinks and aqua, Nylons feels contemporary and on-trend.

The secret ingredient to the Nylons look, however, is the label’s namesake: Nylon mesh. The mesh can be manipulated every which way to create fluid shapes. It also works as the perfect structural base for the crystals ¬– keeping them perfectly in place and letting them shine, without being over the top.

The debut collection has a ‘90s feel to it, think Gianna Versace’s iconic ‘90s pastel collections, or something out of Cher Horowitz’s computerised closet. As Censori and Papas explain, “We grew up in the ’90s; the focus on the choker, pastel block colours and big earrings is nostalgic for us.”
