A good designer knows that improving classic products to make them even stronger is as important as creating new ones. Mere, a Sydney-based, artisanal leather footwear and accessories brand, has released two new backpacks, a re-working of the cult Shadow and the new Runaway.

Mere has been quietly creating quality leather shoes and bags for a number of years. You won’t find this label’s products on posters but rather on the feet of those who appreciate comfort and aesthetics.

With a focus on the finer details, designer James Noakes uses a waxed, top-grain, supple leather that will withstand a busy life in his re-design of the popular Shadow backpack. The signature floral canvas lining remains, but with a sturdier construction. The sleek shape, that comes in black and a mottled brown, is work and party appropriate.

The Runaway is doubly secure with a drawstring body enclosed with a buckle flap, and it is also made with buttery leather and finished with gold hardware. Noakes takes care to think about the life of the product and chooses materials so as the bag ages, it will change without losing its aesthetic.
