HIM&I’s vision of the perfect home is slick and understated. On its site you will see clean and minimal ceramics with bright licks of colour, geometric throws, simple silver rings and leather watches set against grey, white and bleached-wood surfaces.

The website is by creative couple Kara Allen and Joshua Speechley. “Josh and I have talked about starting an online store for years. We both love design – Josh is web developer and I come from a graphic-design background. So it seemed a natural progression to start an online homewares store,” says Allen.

Allen’s background as co-founder of Australian magazine Fallen, and Speechley’s tech know-how have allowed the pair to execute their design vision flawlessly. “I took the aesthetic we both loved – clean, minimal, simple – and applied it to our brand,” says Allen.

The pared-back, Scandinavian-style aesthetic of HIM&I sets it apart from similar sites. “We wanted to keep things really simple, but well designed. Making the photography of the product the main focus,” says Allen. The heroes of the site are products by D.L. & CO, Falcon Enamelware, Kip & Co, Maison Balzac and The Horse. Stylised product shots, individual brand profiles and design tips tie these to HIM&I’s vision of an ideal lifestyle.

Allen and Speechley work together on almost every element of the business. The pair spent a lot of time researching labels and attending design fairs to source their collection of bespoke homewares from established and emerging designers. Some of Allen’s current favourites include the handmade ceramics from Andrei Davidoff, Another Feather’s range of handmade jewellery and the Kate & Kate throws.
