At the far end of level one, in the iconic Strand Arcade, the newly opened Mecca Cosmetica store shines. Inside, the flurry of the CBD falls away, and sweet floral fragrances hang in the air. Here, an enthusiastic Mecca specialist will guide you through a personalised skincare experience.

“We are trying to create an oasis of beautiful calmness, and we feel this is the perfect spot,” says Mecca founder Jo Horgan. While there are already two branches of Mecca Cosmetica in the CBD alone, The Strand Arcade flagship store is the largest.

The flagship boutiques [the others are on Toorak Road in Melbourne and Claremont in Perth] are larger than Mecca’s Cosmetica stores, and they have an expanded MECCA Perfumeria area (with a fragrance concierge) and exclusive scents, body products, and candles not stocked in other stores.

Reminiscent of a New York-style loft, with bay windows overlooking Sydney’s central shopping district, the space is laid out in sections; each staffed by a dedicated specialist.

“We also dedicate more space to applications, as the demand for make-up applications and lessons is growing,” says Hogan.

The Trove, Mecca’s largest to date, contains an exclusive collection of niche brands and luxury beauty products, and what’s up-and-coming in skincare. The dedicated Perfumeria has vases of floral arrangements and stocks brands like Diptyque, Byredo and Fornasetti. Fiona Giovenco is on hand in the Skincare Consultation area to provide in-store signature treatments that were previously only available at special events.

What stands out most about The Trove is the emphasis on the individuals behind each brand. Since opening her first Mecca store in 1997, Hogan has sourced and niche and luxurious beauty products.
