Sydney is not short of designer clearance sales at present, with shopping events and pop-ups being held every other weekend. While for some, the thrill of bagging of a bargain is enough of a lure, other shoppers have come to question whether the overall sale experience – or lack thereof – is worth the time and frustration.
It was a feeling shared by local fashion entrepreneur Stephanie Bowes, who decided to establish Designer Sales Australia (DSA). The aim of the company is to host ‘luxe-for-less’ events that resemble anything but the usual messy, manic sensibilities of a designer clearance sale.
Her first event is a four-day affair, to be held at Byron Kennedy Hall from Thursday September 20 to Sunday September 23, which brings together an impressive roster of local and international labels including Isabel Marant, Comme des Garcons, Carven, Dries Van Noten, M Missoni, We Are Handsome, Haider Ackermann, Therese Rawsthorne and LIFE with BIRD among others.
The point of difference is that shoppers can make their way through end-of-season and one-off sample collections, vintage pieces and a selection of current season stock (with prices up to 70 per cent off), all the while sipping champagne or coffee, eating cupcakes by Sparkle Cupcakery and being attended to by a team of personal stylists. Ideally, they’ll take home pieces they’ll wear and love (rather than random pieces from last season’s stock) after a pleasurable shopping experience.
The sale runs all weekend but is open til 9pm tonight, so head down there after working for a spot of Friday night shopping, drink in hand.
The first DSA sale will be held at Byron Kennedy Hall, The Entertainment Quarter, Lang Road, Moore Park from September 20 to 23. Entry is $5 from Friday to Sunday.
Thursday September 20, 5pm–9pm
