Finding FAT in the maze of the Chatswood Chase Shopping Centre can be quite the challenge. Perched on the far wing of level one, the eclectic emporium has set itself apart from its neighbours. Snap-back hats and Herschel backpacks line the walls, while bespoke homewares trinkets and Lomography cameras act as garnishes to the racks of men’s and women’s clothing.
Established in 1998 in Melbourne, FAT’s original objective was to showcase emerging Australian designers and this intent has not swayed since. Named after the saying ‘living off the fat of the land’ and embracing the meaty array of talent we have in this country, 95 per cent of FAT’s designers are Australian. Established names such as Karla Spetic, P.A.M., Akin (the side project of Alpha 60) and FAT’s own brand line the racks. You may also discover labels you mightn’t have heard of, like the flowing gowns of Daniela Stephanie or the beautifully tailored designs of Kloke for men and women. Men will also discover Parisian label Brooklyn We Go Hard, as well as tables of Cheap Mondays, Otto Denim and more.
Similar to Incu, FAT’s range of homewares steers from quirky mugs, candles and bike helmets through to life-size origami clothing sets, crayon bracelets and little wooden mushroom ornaments perfect for the mantelpiece.
