The Waterloo end of Regent Street has emerged this year as one of Sydney’s most exciting retail strips. Regent Street South is taking on a new character thanks to an influx of enterprising new residents peddling artisanal products.

The latest addition to the emerging interiors precinct is DEA, a beautifully curated retail space run by Karin Huchatz, who formerly managed a lifestyle store and gallery for Fratelli Fresh, and Colin Grimmer.

DEA stands for “delicate eye area”. “We believe everything in the store should please the delicate eye area,” explains Huchatz, whose past life as a gallerist tells in the store’s artfully laid out displays and shelves.

While a website and online store are on the way, creating a beautiful physical space to connect with customers was central to Huchatz’s vision for DEA.

“People still like to shop and discover and love to be surprised. I believe in creating an atmosphere,” she says. “You can't smell and touch a beautiful soap handmade in Turkey, or feel just how soft a hand-loomed robe might be [online]. Our beautiful Kinto Japanese teacups feel so great to hold in the hand.”

Other product highlights include ODE handmade ceramics, classic blue-rimmed white baking dishes and serving-ware from Falcon Enamelware, Tom Dixon accessories and stationary by MOMA.

While Huchatz looked at a number of premises in Sydney’s inner suburbs, including one space in Potts Point, in her hunt for the perfect home for her new store, she loves her new neighbourhood.

“Regent Street in Redfern has so many amazing secrets and is a worthy destination for anyone who loves interiors and shopping,” she says.

“It’s a great and interesting area where neighbours form a community. Our store at 146 Regent Street sits right in the middle of some great furniture and interiors stores and right across the road from The Bearded Tit,” says Huchatz, who has mapped out the perfect Regent Street itinerary for first-time visitors.

“Grab a rhubarb tart or pie from the Wild Cockatoo Bakery, a freshly squeezed juice for $2.50 from Kitty's fruit shop, make a morning or afternoon of the street and then finish off with a drink at The Bearded Tit,” she suggests.
