Design duo and best mates Jodia Natapradja and Ryan Gan are the men behind Sydney Romantics, a streetwear label that’s all about repping our city. “We’re all guilty of wearing New York hats or LA hats so it’s about starting something that Sydneysiders can wear,” explains Natapradja.
High school buddies from the western suburbs, Natapradja and Gan wanted to create a label that encapsulated their love for the city they grew up in. After spending a combined 20 years working in the fashion industry at Insight, Ksubi and Incu, the pair quit their day jobs to focus on launching the label.
“The whole idea of Sydney Romantics, more than anything, is just being approachable. We feel like coming from places like Insight and Ksubi that there’s the whole surf culture thing that everybody gets from Sydney, but there’s still an untapped feeling or story that hasn’t been seen,” says Natapradja.
Sydney Romantics’ first collection is a range of relaxed menswear staples with references to vintage sports apparel and hip-hop. With a focus on functional, high-quality, everyday garments the pair sourced fabrics from Japan as well as locally made fleece to create the range.
The sweaters, jackets and T-shirts are emblazoned with Sydney heart logos, each garment named after a street or suburb. It’s the uniform for a team that has no association with sport but rather a casual, athletic, openness that’s uniquely Sydney.
