Collaborations between artists and designers always result in some exciting and innovative projects. Gorman’s recent campaign, Choose Your Own Adventure Sneakers, combines Lisa Gorman’s signature whimsical patterns and vintage references with the talent of a group of 21 handpicked artistic types to create an exclusive, one-off Gorman collection of customised Adventure Sneakers, each of which are based on specific, subjective ideas of adventure. The collection will raise money for kids’ art therapy school Little Seeds Big Trees by auctioning off each pair of custom sneakers.

The group of artists, designers and illustrators includes The Hungry Workshop, tin&ed, Sibling, Beci Orpin, Mitch Revs, Elke Kramer, Megan Morton, Kate Tucker, Pia Murphy, Ghost Patrol, Miso, Rachel Castle, Kat Macleod, Tai Snaith, Ellie Malin, Ashley Goldberg, Miranda Skoczek, Marsha Golemac, Dawn Tan, Madeleine Stamer and Dhapanbal Guwalilngu Yunupingu.

“Shoes are good for many things, but nothing trumps dancing,” offers Simon Hipgrave of The Hungry Workshop. “We wanted to instil the energy of the dance floor into a pair of shoes so you can take the power of dance with you. The idea being when you lace these up you’ll dance your way to work, dance your way down the Woolies aisle and dance in line for the post office.”

For local Sydney homewares designer Rachel Castle, it’s all about nostalgia. “I have a photo of my 16-year-old self on the top of Ayers Rock, wearing a pair of yellow high-tops, Cherry Lane shorts and a Stuart Membery Lake Idaho T-shirt. I was totally loving myself,” she says. “I remember so fondly and with such love being a teenager in the 80s. My Gorman sneakers are an ode to being footloose, fancy free and under the influence of every fashion hormone/influence/faux pas of this beautiful decade.”

The auction begins at 10am on Friday May 31 and ends 10am Friday June 8 and anyone can bid for the sneakers online. The exhibition will run until June 11, launched in Sydney at Gorman’s The Galeries store on May 28 before leaving for Gorman’s Melbourne Central Store on June 5. Gorman will be chipping in $20 from every sale to Little Seeds Big Trees.
