The Capsule boy is dapper, but also streetwise. A mixture of a traditional gentleman and a savvy scamp, his hair is slicked to one side and his earphones are blasting rap. He wears a wind jacket, the latest sought-after sneakers and a pair of expertly chosen (and cared for) jeans.
Founded in 2010, Capsule has become a go-to for urban wear and casual tailoring with a playful twist. Begun in 2006 as a little street-wear boutique called Fresh In, when the opportunity sprung up to open in Westfield Sydney Fresh In was rebranded as Capsule, and now has stores in North Sydney and a brand new location in Chippendale’s Central Park.
Capsule’s product range is both truly global and pointedly local. You can buy a locally made button-down shirt or a fun pocket tee (it once stocked a range of For The Homies tees with George Costanza’s face on them) but you will also find a range of accessories such as leather goods from Victorian brand Tailfeather, woven leather wristwatches from Belgian label Komono and even air freshener from Japan.
The Central Park store has its own separate space for pop-up exhibitions, displaying the work of artists Capsule works with to create its range of pocket tees. “We think it’s really important to establish local talent instead of just following trends from overseas. I think that’s our main point of difference – being able to work with people to create something really cool and niche and different while having our own unique sense of style,” says brand manager KC Avila.
