The Five Ways intersection in the heart of Paddington is shaping up to be Sydney’s newest retail hub. Long-term residents such as the Parlour X and Land’s End boutiques have a new neighbour in Camilla and Marc, which has just moved into a white-washed terrace in the middle of Glenmore Road. “We feel Five Ways has quite a unique sense of community, which is so in keeping with the spirit of [the brand],” says Marc Freeman who created Camilla and Marc with Camilla Freeman-Topper. “The flagship store will be our biggest retail venture to date.”
Designed by Kelvin Ho and the Akin Creative team, the store balances the building’s original historic fittings with Camilla and Marc’s luxurious, modern minimalism. The 19th-century origins of the terrace are referenced in parquetry wooden flooring and mottled grey walls. But the custom marble counter and frame-like steel fixtures are pure 21st century, as is the interior’s clean, neutral colour palette. Light filters in from a huge skylight and floor-to-ceiling street-front windows.
“As a brand, while we see the great strength of online retail,” says Freeman-Topper, “we still believe in the intimacy and personal approach of bricks and mortar.”
The opening of the Five Ways flagship store is the first step in the brand’s retail expansion this year. Its existing Sydney store – based just down the road at The Intersection – will be a boutique dedicated to Camilla and Marc’s diffusion line C&M. Later in the year the brand will launch its first range of footwear.
Until then, however, the focus is on the newly opened flagship and the current collection. In collaboration with Woolmark, Freeman-Topper and Freeman have created a capsule collection dedicated to the versatility of Merino wool. Featuring a clean, classic silhouette, the collection’s softly tailored separates are paired with fitted roll-neck sweaters and raglan sleeve pullovers in a colour palette of black, grey and peacock blue. Put simply, “The winter collection has an overall luxurious feel,” Freeman-Topper says.
