The Bec & Bridge muse is undeniably a Sydney girl. Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston’s bold dresses, tailored playsuits and flouncy blouses are made for humid evenings spent by the beach. But more recent appearances on the backs of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid have shown Bec & Bridge designs look equally at home in LA and New York.

“We have so much wonderful support from influencers overseas, and that can be so powerful to infiltrate the [international] market,” says the label’s Sydney-based designer, Becky Cooper. When Jenner wore another of their dresses at Paris Fashion Week last year, it sold out. Three times.

Fifteen years after launching their label, Cooper and Yorston have built a network of more than 500 global stockists, including Saks Fifth Ave and Neiman Marcus. Now the label’s first flagship store has opened at Westfield Bondi Junction. “Our online store has had so much success,” says Cooper. So for them, opening a concept store was about making sure “it was the right timing for us.”

Broadsheet Access members get special tables at busy restaurants, tickets to exclusive events and discounts on food, coffee, brand offers and more.

The store stocks the label’s entire collection and exclusive one-off pieces. Then there’s a range of accessories from local and international brands, including Lacoste sneakers; shoes by LA-based label LOQ; jewellery from Australian labels Elvis et Moi and Reliquia; and bags by bohemian Turkish label Mehry Mu.

A recent collaboration with eyewear label Pared for the resort 2018 collection is also on show. The seven styles, including fire-engine red frames with a matt finish, are a mashup of idiosyncratic ‘90s shapes and retro French vibes.

Architect George Livissianis (Cho Cho San, The Apollo) designed the light-filled concept store. It’s defined by soft, neutral tones with a light herringbone brick floor and comfy day beds.

“It’s a huge thing to finally see the brand in bricks and mortar,” Cooper says. “It definitely feels like our biggest milestone."

How important is bricks-and-mortar to the label? “Looking back on the label’s time in the industry, it’s hard to remember the early days when online shopping didn’t even exist,” says Cooper. “You need to earn your customer’s respect by offering them really good collections season-on-season. You can’t drop the ball.”
