Wicked the Musical at the Lyric Theatre
It’s time to try defying gravity: beloved Broadway musical Wicked, a retelling of The Wizard of Oz, is heading to the Emerald City. Not the one in the show – it’s coming back to Sydney.
You might already be familiar with Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, but the musical goes back even further, telling the story of Elphaba (the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda the Good Witch – their rivalry, friendship and how they changed each other for good.
Wicked was last performed in Australia more than a decade ago, premiering in Melbourne in 2008 before opening in Sydney the following year.
The musical is based on the novel Wicked by Gregory Maguire, which is in turn inspired by L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Judy Garland-starring film from 1939.
Since premiering almost 20 years ago, Wicked has won more than 100 major awards and been performed in 16 countries, including Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Brazil, Germany and the UK. Soon it’ll be the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history, taking over from Cats.
It’s arriving in Sydney in August 2023, with exact dates to be announced. Sign up to the waitlist here.
