A brand-new digital opera, with a set comprised of towering movable LED screens, inspired by the talents and troubles of one of Australia’s most iconic artists.

As part of its world-first digital opera season, Opera Australia has commissioned a new work about the colourful life of beloved Australian artist Brett Whiteley.

Directed by David Freeman, Whiteley is collaboration between highly acclaimed composer Elena-Kats Chernin and playwright and librettist Justin Fleming, whose narrative incorporates Whiteley’s meteoric rise to fame, the inextricable link between his addiction and art, and his close bond with his wife, Wendy.

Production designer Dan Potra worked with digital artist Sean Nieuwenhuis to create an immersive set featuring some of the modern master’s most recognisable works.

The technology driven set features 14 seven-metre-high, suspended LED screen, which will move around the stage of the Opera House's Joan Sutherland Theatre.
