Throughout June and July, Osaka Trading Co, Tokyo Bird and Banchō are mixing up a series of highballs, cocktails and events specially designed to bring out the best of Toki, Suntory’s latest whisky blend.
Using a combination of whiskies from its three distilleries – Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita – the master distillers created a versatile whisky that tastes just as good with soda as it does in an Old Fashioned. The hero component in Toki is Chita, a grain whisky distilled from corn that helps balance the flavours with sweetness and some spice.
To celebrate its release, Osaka Trading Co is transforming Artisan Lane in the centre of Tramsheds into a Ramen Alley for three weeks in July (Wednesday to Saturday), with weekly ramen specials designed especially to pair with whisky. Every bowl of ramen entitles you to a $10 Toki Highball, in either straight soda or fancy-flavoured varieties.
At Tokyo Bird, there’s a $200 group Toki Highball deal - including a bottle of Toki Whisky, house-flavoured syrups and soda, made into cocktails for you at the table. Unfinished bottles can be kept and labelled for future visits.
And, Banchō in Haymarket is hosting a special omakase dining event pairing a chef’s selection of kushikatsu skewers – served traditionally with shared katsu sauce and cabbage leaves – and other bites with a range of Toki Highballs.
So – plenty of excuses to drink a bunch of Highballs (as if you really needed them).
