Waterfront Whale Tales
If you see a whale’s tail emerging from the waterfront on your next stroll around the harbour, do not be alarmed. It’s art.
Waterfront Whale Tales sees 30 sculptural whale tails created by 30 different artists poking up around a 6km stretch of Sydney’s Western Harbour, from August 11 – September 24. Migrating its way around Sydney’s Western Harbour, the tails will be discovered from Barangaroo, through King Street, Cockle Bay, Darling Quarter, ICC Sydney, Australian National Maritime Museum, past The Star, on to Pyrmont then the Sydney Fish Market.
Though each is a distinct work to admire in its own right, get closer and discover a unique code you can enter into the Waterfront Whale Tales app to read about the story behind each artwork.
As well as being able to discover all 30 tails via the app, you will also stumble on a freebie, discount or prize. There’s further prizes for completing each of the mini-trails and an entry into a major prize for spotting all 30 whale tails.
After the event, the tail sculptures will be auctioned, with proceeds going to The Kids’ Cancer Project. Expressions of interest to purchase sculptures can also be taken throughout the event.
The initiative is presented by the New Sydney Waterfront Company in partnership with global public art trail specialists Wild in Art and supported by the NSW Government through the Investment NSW’s CBDs Revitalisation Program.
