Couture pieces by Martin Margiela, Thierry Mugler and Vivienne Westwood from a famous private fashion collection will be on show alongside hundreds of treasures hand-picked for sale.

Hundreds of designer garments and accessories – some dating back to the early 1800s – from the renowned Charlotte Smith Fashion Collection have been hand-picked for sale in Sydney and Melbourne in July.

The international private collection includes pieces by Rodarte, Martin Margiela, Thierry Mugler, Mary Katranzou, Vivienne Westwood and more, some of which have been chosen for an accompanying museum-style exhibition to the sale, Time Lapse: Fashion’s Past Creates the Present and Inspires the Future.

Intricate beadwork, embroidery, printing techniques, boning, tailoring, sequins and applique will be highlighted, in particular.

Historical Victorian and Edwardian era and 1920s pieces will be for sale for conservation and reworking, alongside wearable vintage from the ’40s through to the ’90s, including silk and cotton lingerie; cotton ’50s dresses; wool, alpaca and fur garments; suits; and a small clutch of menswear.

The sale and exhibition have been organised in collaboration with the not-for-profit Australian Fashion Council, which is dedicated to supporting and growing Australia’s textiles and fashion industry, and Billy Blue College of Design.
