If you’ve been missing the culinary thrill of Masterchef following the latest season’s finale, then you might’ve binged the new Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend on Netflix to fill the Mystery Box-shaped hole in your weeknight TV viewing. If so, you’ll recognise the Mexican-American chef who will be opening a new pop-up in The Rocks.
Chef Claudette Zepeda grew up bouncing between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California in the US. She competed on both the American and Mexican versions of Top Chef before taking on Ming Tsai in a chocolate-infused battle on Iron Chef and winning with her mextlapique, a dish of steamed fish wrapped in corn husk with cacao butter and mole.
Now she’s taking her signature Mexican flavours and dishes to Playfair Street with a taco-focused menu that draws from the country’s seven regions.
Corn tortillas will be pressed and grilled fresh daily, then filled with: beef tongue and chile morita tomatillo salsa; crispy-skin pork belly with serrano tomatillo salsa; sirloin steak with avocado mash; or Tijuana-style adobada pork with charred pineapple. There’ll also be a fried cheese dish that’s like a Mexican take on dosa, plus Mexican beers and Margaritas.
