Sydney Dance Company: New Breed

Sydney Dance Company’s annual showcase of cutting-edge talent returns to Carriageworks this December, with four new works that imagine where contemporary dance might go next.

New Breed has become a fixture in the city’s cultural calendar, with early-career choreographers taking bold steps supported by one of Australia’s most acclaimed ensembles. This is the program’s 12th year spotlighting fresh voices shaping the future of movement.

The 2025 line-up includes works by award-winning interdisciplinary artist Emma Fishwick, whose practice cuts across digital media, writing and textiles; Sydney Dance Company’s own Ngaere Jenkins, an Aotearoa New Zealand-born dancer of Te Arawa and Ngāti Kahungunu descent making her choreographic debut; Harrison Ritchie-Jones, a boundary-pushing choreographer and filmmaker known for his work across music videos, film and dance theatre; and Company dancer Ryan Pearson, of Biripi, Worimi, Minang, Goreng and Balardung heritage, previously nominated for Most Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer at the Australian Dance Awards.

Since launching in 2014, New Breed has championed dozens of choreographers who have gone on to shape Australia’s dance landscape, with the support of The Balnaves Foundation. This year continues that mission with a line-up that’s dynamic, curious and future-focused. Expect theatrical haze, strobe-like effects and a whole lot of adrenaline.

New Breed runs from December 3 to 13 at Carriageworks, with tickets now on sale and subscription options available.
