Surry Thrills
The Ace Hotel, Golden Age Cinema & Bar, Hotel Hollywood, Pellegrino 2000 and loads of other Surry Hills venues are teaming up for Surry Thrills, a new two-week-long festival of drinking, dining, art and culture. It’s been put together by the group behind Surry Hills pub Harry’s and the Downtown Surry Hills Precinct, and runs from September 15 to 30. It’s a celebration of the top venues found in the part of Surry Hills roughly bordered by Wentworth Avenue, Campbell Street and Oxford Street.
Surry Hills’s buzzing “downtown” area is home to a host of venues that are all within a five-minute walk of one another, and they’re putting that proximity to good use with a slew of experiences in collaboration with one another. Expect one-off team-ups between top restaurants and chefs, long-table lunches, bar takeovers, artist talks, listening parties, exhibitions, record fairs, live performances and heaps more.
DOC Pizza is throwing an Italo Disco Aperitivo, while Nomad is popping corks for a lobster and champagne long lunch. Former Fred’s head chef Danielle Alvarez is teaming up with Rosheen Kaul of Melbourne’s Etta and cookbook author of Chinese-ish for a one-night-only dinner and conversation at Alberto’s Lounge.
Newly opened wine bar Gildas (by Firedoor’s Lennox Hastie) is celebrating new beginnings with a free G&T with any order from the snack menu, or get nostalgic with Chin Chin executive chef Benjamin Cooper as he cooks some of his favourite dishes from the restaurant menu over the last ten years.
The Ricos Tacos and Bad Hombres team are each taking over Tio’s Cerveceria for a weekend to serve tacos alongside $5 Margaritas, while Harry’s is throwing multiple late-night parties featuring Astral People, Wax’o Paradiso, House of Mince and Fleetmac Wood.
Other venues getting in on the action include Butter, China Heights Gallery, Paramount House Hotel and the Soda Factory and). Phew.
