Southeast Aboriginal Arts Market at Carriageworks
The Southeast Aboriginal Arts Market brings together 32 independent Aboriginal artists and collectives under one roof for one weekend. It's curated by Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones.
There are thousands of artworks for sale, from ceramics and textiles to photography and carvings. Every dollar goes directly to the artists. Visitors can also meet the makers and talk about their craft.
Participating artists include ceramicist Penny Evans (Gamilaroi), Haus of Dizzy’s Kristy Dickinson (Wiradjuri), print and textile artist Frances Belle Parker (Yaegl) and collective Casino Wake Up Time (Bundjalung/Kamillaroi).
The markets, now in their seventh year, are a celebration of the diversity of artistic expression and inherited skills in the south-east region: coastal New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, the Murray-Darling basin catchment and Tasmania.
Time your visit right and you can also engage in a program of free workshops and talks (registration is essential). Wiradjuri weaver Jessika Spencer will share how to create a bangle; Uncle Tom Carney, a Ngiyampaa Wayilwan man, will share his experience of working as a shearer and stockman; and Barkindji artist and plant knowledge holder David Doyle will give a hands-on demo.
The Southeast Aboriginal Arts Markets are on from 9am–5pm on Saturday November 23, and from 10am–2pm on Sunday November 24. Entry is free.
