Salote Tawale: I Remember You at Carriageworks

The Australian-Fijian artist’s first major solo exhibition looks at memory, identity and growing up through paintings, sculptures, videos and karaoke – visitors can pick up a mic and sing along.

Inside Carriageworks sits a clothesline, a replica home, and a make-shift karaoke booth playing distant pop tunes.

These ephemeral fragments are part of I Remember You, by Anglo-Australian and Fijian artist Salote Tawale. A collection of objects and sounds designed to ruminate on how identity is formed through memory, the show was conceived as a “memory bank” of – and by – the artist.

The exhibition is built from references to Tawale’s experience growing up in Australia as part of the Pacific diaspora. By drawing on the materials of her life, both literal and figurative, I Remember You acknowledges the subjectivity of experience to explore the relationship between individual and collective identity.makes

I Remember You curated by Aarna Fitzgerald Hanley, runs from Friday November 17, 2023 to Sunday January 28, 2024. Entry to the exhibition is free, with a public program to be announced soon.
