Retro Metro Festival at Marrickville Metro
It’s been a year since Marrickville Metro unveiled its $142 million new wing, which added a dozen new eateries, 40 new retailers, a Coles, a gym and huge new liquor store to the beloved shopping centre.
And to celebrate its first birthday, the Metro is hosting a bash that throws it back to the disco era.
Head down for a two-day celebration that includes jukeboxes, live music and DJ sets, roving performers (rollerskaters, drag queens, disco performers and more), and activities for kids like bio-glitter tattooing, face painting and biodegradable balloon art.
Sample food from bite-sized stations that let you try before you order, then sit down for a meal at Rice Pantry, Nanyang Malaya Cafe, Izakaya Tori or Slim’s Quality Burger. You can also order a drink from a pop-up bar.
Two arcade alleys will be lined with old-school arcade machines, so you can try and get a new high-score on Pac-Man. Or strike a pose at the photo wall, complete with hot-pink neon signs and a backdrop of recycled art. And visitors can be part of a large new community art piece: two giant Ms will be popping up as blank canvases, with everyone invited to add their own twist.
The Metro Markets on Smidmore St are also returning – shop art, ceramics, jewellery, lifestyle products and more from 25 stalls by local inner-west creatives.
From 10am to 5pm each day.
