Grill Americano, Chris Lucas’s swish Melbourne restaurant, is about to open in Sydney. And Broadsheet Access members will be first through the door for an exclusive dinner hosted by the restaurateur himself.

The lavish Venetian steakhouse – known for white-jacketed waiters, silver service and tableside theatrics – finds its Sydney home in the historic Qantas House building. And since the kitchen is more than twice the size of Melbourne’s, it’s readying to deliver the largest menu in the Lucas group’s stable.

Lucas, who’s behind a clutch of Melbourne dining rooms like Maison Batard, Kisume and Society – plus Sydney’s Chin Chin – will bring a heap of original Grill Americano talent north with him.

At the helm is executive chef Vincenzo Ursini, who’s spent over a year at the original Grill Americano and is switching states for the opening. (His CV also boasts Michelin cred from time at Ristorante Reale, Le Calandre and Mugaritz.) Guests can expect an extensive grill section, silky handmade pastas, sophisticated chicchetti (small savoury snacks) and of course its famed tiramisu. Plus, Ursini says, a bit more surf with the turf.

“The menu is a very good combination of what’s been working well in Melbourne and what we think will be our bread and butter, let’s say,” he says. “There is more scope to play with seafood and offer something a bit different in terms of size.”

Access members can hear all about the new venture from Lucas himself, in conversation with Broadsheet editorial director Katya Wachtel, at the Readers’ Preview – as well as tuck into a lavish sample menu.
