Osteria Mucca is opening in Newtown and Broadsheet Access members can sample its old-world Italian plates at an exclusive Readers Dinner. Expect cocktails on arrival, a leisurely degustation and a Q&A with head chef Janina Allende.

The long-awaited opening of Osteria Mucca in Newtown has finally arrived. It’s the fourth addition to a slate of restaurants now housed in the Paisano & Daughters precinct. And Broadsheet Access members are invited to an exclusive Readers Dinner on April 9.

Osteria Mucca is the latest offering from the team behind Hot-Listed restaurant Continental Deli. It’s helmed by head chef Janina Allende (of Alberto’s Lounge, Valentina and Pellegrino 2000), with award-winning pastry chef Lauren Eldridge on dessert.

The menu is a love letter to old-world Italy. Allende draws from family recipes to craft honest, time-honoured dishes. Expect the likes of mellanzane sott'olio; spaghetti with prawns, lemon and bottarga; and house sausages. The space is a former butcher shop, and the team holds onto its original tiles and worn edges for a nostalgic feel.

The Readers Dinner will be an intimate affair – it’s a 50-seat venue, so tickets are limited. You’ll be greeted with a cocktail on arrival, before sitting down for a long, convivial Italian feast. Allende will be on hand for a Q&A too.
