Hugo Weaving and Irish actor Olwen Fouéré are a power couple in the midst of political upheaval in this darkly comic play.

In an unspecified Central European country, the president (Hugo Weaving) and his wife (Olwen Fouéré) are facing what might be the final days of their right-wing regime. A revolution is looming outside their palace gates, and their way of life is about to change in a big way.

The President – a co-production between Sydney Theatre Company and Gate Theatre Dublin – is a “strange, twisted black comedy” according to Irish director Tom Creed. It’s about power, it’s about fear and insecurity, and it’s about us. Creed says the characters are a mirror to the audience, and what’s terrifying is how similar we are to them.

The cast includes Irish actor Kate Gilmore, who plays the president’s mistress, and Australian actor Julie Forsyth, who plays a housemaid to the power couple.

It’s an adaptation of Austrian playwright Thomas Bernhard’s play, which was first performed in 1975. The production premiered in Dublin (where it received rave reviews), and the shows at Roslyn Packer Theatre mark the first time Bernhard’s play has been staged for an Australian audience.
