Power Up Festival at White Bay Power Station
White Bay Power Station swung open its doors to the public for the first time in 100 years for this year’s Biennale of Sydney, and now it is opening up again for a free arts and culture festival in September.
Headlined by Aria-winning Josh Pyke (who grew up in Balmain and, allegedly, used to hang out in the disused building as a young kid), the festival kicks off on Friday September 20 and has three full days of entertainment – from circus acts to cabaret.
If you’re here for Josh Pyke, he’s playing on Saturday. On the same day, you can catch impressive aerial action from Legs on the Wall, see indie-pop rising star Jade Yee-Smith, and hear choral music from Leichhardt Espresso Chorus.
Friday’s acts include live music from Assyrian Australian worldbeat band Azadoota; the globe-trotting band dresses in costumes inspired by their ancient royal ancestors. There’s also experimental musician Jared Underwood, who creates improvised music under the name Batterie. Plus, circus, comedy and magic from a variety of performers.
Sunday is the most family-friendly day. The Inner West Community Band will perform in the Boiler House, and the 50-piece Peter Seymour Orchestra will present two one-hour meet-the-orchestra sessions, which are catered to all ages.
In the huge Turbine Hall, you can see artworks from more than 250 local artists including those represented by Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-Operative and One+2 Studios.
On the snack front, there’ll be food and drink all weekend from Little Marionette, Casa Esquina, Mary’s, Mapo Gelato, Blackwattle Distilling and White Bay Brewery, among others.
