The Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new North Building transforms into a lo-fi experimental club for one night only, with a line-up featuring a David Lynch collaborator, and a Kenya-based producer described as one of “15 East African Artists you need to hear”.

American composer and sound designer Dean Hurley heads to the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) on Thursday June 15 for Playback – a lo-fi experimental club night and Hurley’s only Sydney show, following his appearance at Dark Mofo. A frequent collaborator of David Lynch, Hurley was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for season three of Twin Peaks. Playback will be the composer’s first-ever Sydney show, but he’s no stranger to AGNSW – he composed the score to the gallery’s Sydney Festival event Masters of modern sound in 2019.

Joining Hurley for the one-night-only affair is Kenya-based sound artist and producer KMRU in his debut Sydney show. Named by Resident Advisor as one of “15 East African Artists you need to hear” in 2018, KMRU has performed all over the world and is known for his exquisite combination of field recordings and electronic tapestries. Rounding off the pulsing, experimental line-up is Sydney-based musician, composer and artist Megan Alice Clune, whose recent records on Longform Editions and Room40 have received critical acclaim, and whose compositions, performances and installations have taken her all over the world.

Entry to Playback includes access to the exhibition Adrián Villar Rojas: The End of Imagination in former wartime oil bunker The Tank, complete with subterranean sonics and dark visuals to complement the musical line-up.

Tickets are on sale now.
