Pickled ﻛﺑﯾس at Belvoir St Theatre
Pickled ﻛﺑﯾس is a new play co-created by Najee Tannous, Antony Makhlouf, Hayden Tonazzi, May Youssif and Francesco Pelli. It navigates the balance between cultural traditions and modern expressions of sexual diversity; its story is about the sole inheritance of a jar of pickles – left by the mother of two estranged brothers, Sammy and Yousif, who are both queer.
Created in partnership with PYT Fairfield, the show falls under Belvoir’s 25A program that looks after independent and emerging artists, covering production and marketing costs through the full proceeds from ticket sales.
It’s a dramedy that combines playfulness with themes of grief and reconciliation. Co-star Antony Makhlouf said, in a statement, that the show, “reimagines Lebanese Australian culture in new ways charged with the objective of celebrating diverse identities often underrepresented on stage and hidden in the real community.”
