Jen Rubio says a broken suitcase sparked the idea for lifestyle brand Away, and in early 2016 she launched the company (along with business partner Steph Korey) with a handsome-looking piece of luggage: The Carry-On. Fast forward a couple years and the US startup is said to be worth $US1.4 billion ($2 billion).
The direct-to-consumer lifestyle brand has since expanded to include a range of travel products, with bags that feature helpful additions such as built-in phone chargers and 360-degree spinning wheels. Now Away is launching in Australia, and to celebrate it’s hosting a pop-up concept store called Origin: Away in Paddington from June 14 to 16. Six Aussie entrepreneurs have been invited to speak about how they built successful businesses abroad.
It’s an impressive list: Ryan Lobo of New York-based womenswear brand Tome, Nick Stone of successful NYC cafe chain Bluestone Lane, jewellery designer Hermione Underwood of London-based Atelier Romy, fashion designer Dion Lee, and Ronnie Flynn, co-founder of New York restaurant The Flower Shop.
The event kicks off on Friday June 14 at 3pm, with Flower Shop cocktails served at 4pm and a panel discussion with all guests from 5pm to 6pm. It’s also on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
