Two of Sydney’s most acclaimed venues have joined for a one-off pop-up on the final day of the World Class Cocktail Festival, which runs from Wednesday April 28 to Sunday May 2.
Tucked behind a roller door down an innocuous Sydney service alley is Cantina OK!, a self-proclaimed “micro mezcal mecca”. It’s home to Sydney’s best Margarita and was recently rated 28th on the prestigious World’s 50 Best Bars list. Cantina OK! is also a candidate for the city’s smallest venue – it’s standing room only for around 20 patrons at a time, who come for the seasonal cocktail menu celebrating premium tequila and mezcal.
A kilometre or so away in Surry Hills is Shwarmama, a kebab shop with a twist. Brought to life by Mat Lindsay (Ester, Poly) and Russell Beard (Paramount Coffee Project, Reuben Hills), Shwarmama offers a short and sweet menu of classic pitas and wraps – from Israeli sabich filled with fried eggplant, eggs and hummus to shawarma with marinated chicken, garlic sauce and cabbage.
The menu for the one-off Mama OK! collab includes Lebanese-influenced tacos árabes (available with either al pastor pork and pineapple, fish falafel, or fried eggplant and queso); $15 Margaritas featuring Don Julio tequila, mezcal, lime, sugarcane and orange oil; and $15 mercados featuring Don Julio tequila, melon jelly, lime leaf soda and rockmelon granita.
