Suntory’s basement residency serves up a taste of Japanese izakaya culture every Wednesday across August and September with a whisky highball and karaage pairing designed for easy after-work catch-ups.

As part of Suntory’s residency at Sakura House, the brand is turning hump day into Hi-Kara Wednesdays from August 5 to September 30. The name comes from the classic combination of a whisky highball and karaage. It’s part of nomikai, Japan’s answer to post-work knock-off drinks culture, where refreshing whisky highballs, fried chicken and good company congregate around the table.

At the centre of the experience is Suntory Kakubin Whisky, the original Japanese blended whisky first created in 1937 by Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii. Still Japan’s top-selling whisky, Kakubin is known for its balanced, approachable profile, with notes of citrus, apple and subtle oak that shine in the brand’s signature highball. Served long over ice with lemon and soda, it’s designed to complement food rather than overpower it.

The weekly special includes an effervescent Suntory Kakubin whisky highball and juicy, golden fried chicken karaage for only $25. Hi-Kara Wednesdays run throughout the Suntory House residency. Think of it as an excuse to settle in with one of Japan’s most iconic whisky pours and best-loved izakaya snacks after work. Walk-ins only – no bookings.
