Free Entry to MCA Australia's Julie Mehretu Exhibition – for One Day Only
Experience the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia’s landmark exhibition Julie Mehretu: A Transcore of the Radical Imaginatory for free on January 29, courtesy of the museum’s major partner Telstra.
Part of the Sydney International Art Series, the exhibition showcases the groundbreaking works of contemporary artist Julie Mehretu, widely recognised as one of the most significant artists of her generation. Known globally for her large-scale abstract paintings, Mehretu’s powerful and often monumental works have seen the Addis Ababa-born, Harlem-based artist dubbed “one of today’s most original painters” by the New York Times. More recently, she was commissioned to create an 83-foot glass mural for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
Exclusive to the southern hemisphere, the MCA exhibition spans over 80 works – from the artist’s early creations in the mid-1990s to 13 new paintings made especially for this exhibition. Mehretu’s dynamic works are alive with intricately layered marks, lines and symbols, addressing urgent contemporary topics ranging from migration and global capitalism to climate change. Alongside her artworks, visitors can enjoy a rich program of talks and tours, and explore family-friendly spaces expanding on the exhibition’s themes.
No bookings necessary – just rock up on Wednesday January 29 and explore the exhibition to your heart’s content. Last entry at 4.30pm. Visit the MCA website for more information.
