Frankenstein at the Theatre Royal
It’s been more than 200 years since Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, which some consider to be the first science fiction novel (it also had a huge influence on horror). Two centuries on, it still feels timeless – and perhaps more relevant than ever.
This new stage production, by Shake & Stir Theatre Co, combines the tale’s classic elements with cutting-edge production technology like automation, pyrotechnics and more than 140 square metres of LED video panels. The adaptation opened with a sell-out season at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre last year – and now it’s bringing the horror and thrills to Sydney’s Theatre Royal.
It’s a story we’ve been told a hundred times over: ambitious scientist Victor Frankenstein uses the remains of the dead to bring a new being to life. The result is, at first, miraculous – then proves disastrous to Victor’s life and happiness.
Directed by Nick Skubij and adapted by Nelle Lee from Shelley’s material, Frankenstein also stars Darcy Brown as Victor Frankenstein, Jeremiah Wray as the Creature and Chloé Zuel as Elizabeth.
