The Essential Duchamp
Until August, the Art Gallery of NSW will be home to the most in-depth survey of the Marcel Duchamp’s life and art ever seen in Australia.
The French-American painter and sculptor is considered one of the 20th century’s most innovative and influential artists. The Essential Duchamp, which features around 125 works from Philadelphia Museum of Art’s world-renowned Duchamp collection, is a comprehensive entry point to his world.
Never-before-seen early works sit alongside iconic paintings such as Nude descending a staircase (no 2) (1912) – which scandalised American audiences when it was first exhibited – and the infamous ready-made urinal Fountain 1950 (a replica of 1917 original).
