Ricos Tacos founder Toby Wilson is on porridge duty at Superfreak, with a maple-doused bowl on all week. Plus, a one-off screening of his award-winning doco The Golden Spurtle with a three-part porridge menu.

Toby Wilson is best known for his punchy Ricos Tacos plates. But let it be known the chef has almost won the World Porridge Championships. Twice. His enthusiasm and prowess for the winter brekkie bowls is shared by the team at Superfreak, the Marrickville cafe with an outstanding butter-topped serve. For Broadsheet’s 2026 Dine Out festival, the two oat-standing teams are getting together.

Spurtlefreak brings Wilson’s porridge recipe to the Superfreak kitchen – all week long. The limited-edition bowls will have a base of steel-cut oats, before bananas, butter and Sydney-made smoked maple syrup (from LP’s Quality Meats) get involved.

For the true porridge heads, a screening of award-winning (and truly delight-inducing) documentary The Golden Spurtle – which Wilson himself stars in – will hit the venue on Thursday July 30 at 6pm. Tickets are $50, which includes a three-part porridge menu (including a silky cacio e pepe number). Bookings are essential for the screening.
