The legendary LA party night is coming to Australia for the first time. Expect boundary-pushing artists, glamour, sex positivity and gender self-expression.

In news that bucks the trend of Sydney’s draconian lockout laws, Chippendale pub The Lansdowne, has had its licence extended to 5am. That means punters can enter the pub after 1.30am and keep partying till five.

To mark the occasion, the pub is partnering with restaurateur Maurice Terzini (Icebergs, The Dolphin Hotel, Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta) and touring company Picnic to bring one of LA’s biggest club nights to Sydney.

A Club Called Rhonda is a monthly party founded in 2008 by Gregory Alexander and Loren Granich to encourage inclusivity, open-mindedness, gender self-expression and sex-positive sexuality in a hedonistic environment. It’s since toured cities such as San Francisco, Berlin, London and Mexico City. The party on August 24 will be its first time Down Under.

The party will happen across two floors of the pub from 9pm to 5am, with plenty of lasers, glitter and DJ sets from a range of local and international acts. Expect sounds from Montreal’s ghetto-house revivalist Martyn Bootyspoon, Atlanta’s genre-flipping QTPOC (Queer and Trans People of Colour) crusader Leonce, and Rhonda co-founder DJ Goddollars (aka Granich).

From Australia, expect queer royalty and global dance-scene legends Stereogamous, who’ll be joined by Bidjara/Kullali performer Sarah Moany and Sydney DJ and community organiser Ayebatonye. Some of Sydney’s top DJs – including Kali, Adi Toohey, Luen, Carla Uriarte and Freda’s David Abram – will be on deck duty. There’ll also be a range of hosts and other performers, including Aaron Manhattan, Beau Kirk, Millie Skyes, Uda and Felicia Foxx.

Terzini says A Club Called Rhonda Sydney was born out of a curation for inner-west cultural hub Carriageworks, where he was going to show off the best of LA’s party, bar and art scenes.

He’s bringing out Yael Vengroff, who was recently named American Bartender of the Year for her work at The Spare Room in The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in LA. She’ll be putting together a drinks list for a special aperitivo hour from 9pm to 10.30pm.

The Dolphin Hotel will keep the fun going the following day with Vengroff hosting an afterparty from 7pm to 9pm.
