The Australian Ballet’s Nijinsky at Sydney Opera House
Nijinsky is a story of genius, fame and struggle. The Australian Ballet is touring the performance to the Regent Theatre in Melbourne and the Sydney Opera House, from February 21 to April 22. And members of Broadsheet Access can score an exclusive double pass to see it at the Sydney Opera House on April 19.
The dance drama – described by the Guardian as “searing, passionate and defiantly queer” – is set in early-20th-century Paris, retelling the tumultuous life story of visionary ballet dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. The audience follows him through his troubled childhood, ill-fated romances, sensual performances and battle with schizophrenia.
Vulnerable, urgent performances by some of the nation’s leading dancers are complemented by the grand set and costume design, a live orchestra from Opera Australia and (of course) the timeless Sydney Opera House setting.
