Archie Party at the Art Gallery of NSW
The Archibald Prize may be 101 years old, but its celebration of famous faces and local heroes is just as relevant as ever.
This year’s prize went to Blak Douglas for Moby Dickens, his celebrated portrait of his friend artist Karla Dickens – the first time the prize has been awarded for a portrait of a First Nations woman.
If you’re yet to see the work, the Archie Party is the ideal time. On June 24, the Art Gallery of NSW will open its doors for a one-night-only party featuring live music, mountains of snacks and rare after dark access to the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2022 exhibition. Aside from the exhibition, you’ll also find interactive art experiences from artists Kim Leutwyler and Blak Douglas.
The musical line-up includes some of Western Sydney’s finest, co-curated with Joji Malani. You’ll hear hip hop/R&B trio Planet Vegeta – who will be bringing Kapulet, Becca Hatch, Sailor Goon, Mlbrn and CG Fez with them – Malani's new solo project Pei performing with a nine piece band, and the ambient sounds of electronic duo 700 Feel with live visuals from Passive Kneeling. Round it out with joyful ‘90s hip hop by DJ Boosie and R&B bangers with DJ Carolina Gasolina.
Snacks will be provided by the likes of Fishbowl and Hangry Wolf BBQ, Archie Rose, Young Henrys and Manly Spirits with dessert coming from Messina and Grumpy Donuts.
